Connect ChatGPT
Add MailMoose to ChatGPT as a connector, so you can read and send mail without leaving the chat.
MailMoose runs a hosted MCP server, so ChatGPT and other hosted assistants can connect to it directly. You sign in and approve the connection once, and no key is copied anywhere.
This is different from Claude Code, which runs a small program on your own machine and uses an API key. Hosted assistants cannot do that, so they use a sign in flow instead.
Before you start
- A MailMoose account with an organization selected.
- The server address, which is your MailMoose URL followed by
/api/mcp.
Connect
- In ChatGPT, open the connector settings and choose to add an MCP server.
- Enter your server address, for example
https://your-mailmoose-url/api/mcp. - ChatGPT sends you to MailMoose to sign in.
- Review what the connection is asking for, then choose Allow access.
- You are returned to ChatGPT and the tools are available.
You will not paste a key anywhere. ChatGPT receives a token that belongs to you, and only after you approve it on a MailMoose page you reached yourself.
What the approval screen means
The screen lists exactly what is being requested:
| Request | What it allows |
|---|---|
| Read your mail | List conversations and read messages in the mailboxes you can see |
| Send mail as you | Reply in conversations and send new messages from your addresses |
| Manage domains and addresses | Connect domains, turn on sending, and create mailboxes |
Approve only what the assistant needs. Reading is enough for summarising and searching.
Only approve a request you started yourself. If an approval screen appears when you were not connecting anything, close it.
What you can ask for
- "What came in overnight across my domains?"
- "Summarise the thread with Jane about the January quote."
- "Reply to that and say Thursday at 14:00 works."
- "Have we emailed this supplier before?"
- "Connect yourdomain.com and tell me what to add at my registrar."
- "Turn on sending for yourdomain.com."
What it will not do
The same protections apply as everywhere else.
- Replies cannot be redirected. Replying takes a conversation and a message, never a recipient, so nothing written inside an email can change where your reply goes.
- New recipients need your word. Sending to an address you have never corresponded with is refused until you confirm it.
- Message content is marked as untrusted, so text from senders is treated as information rather than instruction.
- Only the permissions you approved are available. Tools you did not grant do not appear at all.
Disconnect
Remove the connector in ChatGPT. To be certain, you can also revoke access from MailMoose, which takes effect on the next request whatever the assistant does.
Common issues
- The connection fails immediately. Check the address ends in
/api/mcpand starts withhttps. - You are asked to sign in repeatedly. Choose an organization in MailMoose first, then try again.
- Reading works but sending does not. Sending was not among the permissions you approved. Reconnect and approve it.
- Sending stops partway through the day. The default is 100 sends per connection and 1,000 per organization over the previous 24 hours. Wait for older sends to leave that window.
