Email addresses

Create an email address

Add a mailbox such as thomas@yourdomain.com so it can send and receive mail in MailMoose.

An email address in MailMoose is a mailbox on one of your connected domains. Creating one takes a few seconds and there is no limit on how many you have.

You need a verified domain first. Addresses cannot exist on a domain MailMoose has not confirmed you own.

Before you start

  1. The domain is connected and its records show as found. See Connect a domain.
  2. You know the address you want, for example hello for hello@learnfarsi.app.

Add one

  1. Go to Domains and select the domain's row to open it.
  2. Under Addresses, type the part before the @ and select Add address. The domain is already filled in, so this is the only field.

A row that says Add an address is a verified domain with no mailbox on it, so nothing sent to it can be delivered yet.

The address is ready immediately. Mail sent to it arrives as soon as your domain's MX record points at MailMoose.

Display name and signature

Each address in the list has its own edit control. Select it to set:

  1. A display name, such as Thomas at LaunchPanda. This is the name recipients see next to your address.
  2. A signature, added automatically to new messages and replies sent from this address. Edit or remove it from the compose window before sending, the same as any other text.

Deleting an address

Select the delete control next to an address and confirm. This cannot be undone, and mail sent to it afterwards bounces. If it has conversations in it, the confirmation tells you how many go with it.

Choosing a good address

  1. Use a person's name for individual correspondence, such as thomas@.
  2. Use a role for shared work, such as support@, hello@, or billing@. Roles survive people leaving.
  3. Keep it short. People type these by hand.
  4. Stay consistent across your domains, so hello@ means the same thing everywhere.

Reserved addresses

Some addresses are reserved and cannot be created, because mail systems rely on them behaving in a standard way:

  1. postmaster
  2. abuse
  3. mailer-daemon
  4. noreply and no-reply

Common issues

  1. There is no field to add an address. The domain is not verified yet, so the row tells you to open its settings instead. Open the gear at the end of the row and select Check DNS.
  2. That address already exists. Each address can exist once per domain. The same name on a different domain is fine.
  3. The address is rejected as invalid. Remove spaces and any characters outside letters, numbers, and . _ + -.
  4. Mail to the new address bounces. Your MX record is not pointing at MailMoose yet. See Move incoming mail.
